Join us at Shamwari Conservation Experience and help the conservation team monitor Africa’s largest land mammal! Elephant monitoring plays an important role in any game reserve and the volunteers at SCE get involved on a weekly basis. We start by tracking and identifying the elephant herd. We then log their position on a GPS, which will be used to map their movements later. We spend at least an hour with them, recording the vegetation they consume. Elephants’ diet change between seasons and according to rainfall and it is important to know what they are eating and if they are having a negative effect on certain plant species. Besides the vegetation observations, we also record herd size and I.D. and name any new calves born. We furthermore identify all bulls found and record if they are in musth and if they are associated with any herd. There is no better way to work with animals, than with SCE team!
