The extraordinary marine landscape of Greece is unlike any other, fast becoming a landmark location to monitor the diverse behaviours of the incredible loggerhead sea turtle.
Based on the island of Kefalonia, the project takes place to the west of mainland Greece, where you will work alongside expert conservationists to study the foraging and migration patterns of this endangered creature – as well as volunteering valuable hours to protecting their native coastal habitats.
Beyond the turtles, you will also observe the inspiring conservation efforts of the magnificent monk seal. Now with only two surviving species remaining, your support has never been so paramount to the future of their ecosystem – and by taking part in this project, you can inherit a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is set to make a long-lasting impact for generations to come.
Discover the incredible activities you can expect while volunteering at the inspiring Wildlife Sense Turtle Conservation Centre.
Explore the day-to-day adventures which you will embark upon throughout the project, including informative snorkel research, to exciting evening beach profiles.
Arrive into Kefalonia airport. Transfer to hotel, located near to the sea turtle conservation centre.
Start orientation, introductory lectures and training – including bike safety training, beach training (light pollution methods, nest finding and GPS) and sea turtle ID and harbour survey techniques.
Split into harbour survey and nesting beach survey groups. Attend a lecture on drone technology, as well as a session on light pollution technology and solutions. In the evenings, conduct a harbour survey and the very first evening beach profile.
Take part in snorkel research, after attending a lecture on the Posidonia Meadows. Following evening beach profile, protect the nests at risk of light pollution.
Join a lecture on microplastics, followed by an afternoon of sand sifting – as well as another lecture. Begin evening beach profile, before light pollution checks of the nests.
Attend a lecture on seal and dolphin conservation, before setting off on a boat trip – as well as attending another guest veterinarian lecture in the evening. Visit Mount Ainos for a trail hike, lecture and education centre visit. Conduct an evening beach profile, before starting light pollution checks of the nests.
Split into harbour survey and nesting beach survey groups. In the afternoon, attend a lecture on anthropogenic influence on sea turtles in Kefalonia. Start evening beach profile, followed by light pollution checks of the nests.
Experience a day at leisure, followed by a farewell group meal in the evening.
Enjoy your last morning of leisure, before transferring to the airport for the flight home.
Accommodation
Stay at a family run, friendly hotel – very close to the sea turtle conservation centre – in shared rooms of between 2-3 people.
Food
The restaurant will provide breakfast, dinner and a packed lunch each day for the entire stay. Please let us know of any dietary requirements, so we can ensure you are adequately catered for.
