Project Overview

Project Type: Community: Health and Social Care

Location: Various sites, Drakensberg region, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Arrival/Departure: O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg

Duration: 12 days

Accommodation: Rondawels, Farmhouse, Safari Tented Camp

The Zulu Land health & social care project is located conveniently close to Johannesburg (3.5 – 4 hours) in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountain range.

The area is one of the most stunning regions of South Africa and is close to the renowned KwaZulu-Natal battlefields, an area steeped in history.

The main project location is in the rural Zulu community of Emmaus situated within Ukhahlamba Local Municipality under Magnificent Northern Drakensberg Mountains which are amazingly green in summer and snowy in winter.

Emmaus hospital provides District health care services with 156 useable beds and 375 staff members including clinics staff. They serve as a referral hospital to five Primary Health Care clinics, also having 3 mobiles serving 54 points. The hospital provides care for the population of 151 949.

Students will be taught and work alongside a number of inspiring professionals;

Community hospitals & health clinics who service local Zulu communities by providing care and educational workshops on health issues.

Not-for-profit organisations embedded within the local community, helping to support a number of important health & social issues through education and local funding.

NGOs (non government organisations) who deal with larger health & social care issues. These organisations act independently from the South African government and play a major role in key development areas, utilising intonational funding to pursue their goals.

Nambiti Conservation Research Team manage the day to day conservation management and research of the Big 5 Game Reserve.

 

During your time on the programme, your time will be split working with local not-for-profit originations in the local community and larger, NGO, initiatives. You will also have the opportunity to experience exciting conservation work on a Big 5 Game Reserve. Below are project examples that you be involved with:

Health & Social Care

  • Work in rural outreach clinics

  • Volunteer with Move Africa, fighting against period poverty
  • Talks on Zulu Culture
  • Community visits and projects
  • Meet Zulu healers and learn about medicinal values of plants vs western medicines

Conservation & Wildlife

  • Habitat and Prey Selection of Predators
  • Alien Vegetation Control /
    Reserve Maintenance
  • Educational Bush Walks – Ecology & Botany
  • Tracks, Signs and Spoor
  • Use of Telemetry Tracking
  • Elephant Monitoring / Population Study
  • Rhino Monitoring – Awareness and Anti-Poaching

Additional activities (Drakensburg)

  • Canopy tours
  • Didima Rock Art Centre
  • Bird of Prey Centre
  • A short hike and splash in a mountain stream
  • Drakensberg Boys Choir (concert every Wednesday & Saturday)

Where You'll Stay

ACCOMMODATION

During your Health & Social Care project, you will be accommodated at 3 different centres.

First is the Zamimpilo Training centre in Emmaus Community. The centre is a five minute walk to Emmaus hospital and comprises of traditional Rondawel (round Zulu huts) with 6 to 8 beds per hut.

The second project location is at the Geluksberg Clinic. Accommodation is in a converted farmhouse in a remote community. Rooms are shared with en-suite shower rooms.

The last part of the project is located at Nambiti Bush Camp. In keeping with the Safari Adventure theme, groups are accommodated on the reserve in comfortable safari tents, with communal hot and cold showers and regular flushing toilets.

All accommodation is basic yet comfortable and conveniently located to allow us to access all project locations.

Three meals per day are provided at each location.
