NAMIBIA WILDLIFE CONSERVATION project

With a landscape composed of dense bushlands, semi-arid climates and deserts that feature some of the world’s largest sand dunes, Namibia is unsurprisingly home to a great variety of wildlife and habitats – together with the Naankuse (N/a’an ku sê) Wildlife Experience, we have tailored a conservation programme that truly embraces the unique diversity of this incredible country.

Whether you’re travelling by horseback or hiking across deep canyons and riverbeds, experience the remarkable ecology of southern Africa’s high lying central plateau and the environments surrounding the Great Escarpment. Observe the magnificent ecosystems at play – whilst hoping to sneak a peek at the rhinos, elephants and lions located all around!

As our first project destination, Africa holds a very special place in our hearts and for us, there’s no country that captures the spirit of conservation quite like Namibia. As one of the least densely populated countries in the world, escape to Namibia to experience a true feeling of remoteness – and initiate your return back to nature.

PROJECT DETAILS

Explore the incredible activities you will embark upon on our fantastic Namibia Wildlife Conservation Project.

Tracking of rhinos, elephants, African wild dogs and lions
Preparing food and feeding the wildlife and farm animals
Cleaning and maintaining enclosures
Providing intensive care for juvenile wildlife -including overnight care for animals such as baboons
Researching and monitoring free-ranging carnivores in the area - followed by analysis of camera traps and GPS data

Hiking across a variety of landscapes, including deep canyons, mountains, cliffs and riverbeds to help inform research
Visiting nearby farms and developing relationships to aid prevention of human-wildlife conflict
Game counting to ensure population density is suitable to maintain overall health of the ecosystem
Day trip to Sossusvlei and Naukluft Mountains; visit some of the largest sand dunes in the world

ITINERARY

Discover the fantastic activities and experiences we have prepared – from hands-on wildlife work, to explorations of some of the word’s largest sand dunes.

Day 1 - 2

Overnight flight from London to Hosea Kutako International Airport, Windhoek, Namibia. Transfer to Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary. Tent allocation and walk through the itinerary at the farm conference room.

Day 3

Enclosure cleaning, food preparation, introduction to wildlife immobilisation and health.

Day 4

Baboon walk and live studies. Project and research work; setting camera traps, animal GPS and camera data analysis, game counts, digging water holes and maintaining fences.

Day 5

Carnivore feed, conservation presentation, live cheetah studies and visit to a local school - sponsored by Naankuse and its volunteers.

Day 6

VHF telemetry introduction, followed by African wild dog, lion or elephant tracking on the Zannier Reserve. Review the day's tracking and analyse findings.

Day 7

Anti-poaching unit introduction and lecture, followed by rhino tracking and identification on the Zannier Reserve. Later in the day, go for a horse ride through the bush.

Day 8

Transfer to Neuras Wildlife and Wine Estate. Induction presentation, cheetah work and pizza night.

Day 9

Hike while conducting field research, including meerkat observations.

Day 10

All-day trip and visit to the Naukluft Mountains and Sossusvlei, a salt and clay pan surrounded by high red dunes.

Day 11

Human-wildlife conflict; visit neighbouring farms as part of the Farm Outreach Programme. Project research studies and animal feeding.

Day 12

Transfer back to Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary. After dinner relax and unwind under the stars listening to Sān Stories - learning of the native people's history and way of life.

Day 13 - 14

Transfer to Hosea Kutako International Airport, Windhoek for the overnight return flight.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

Accommodation

Stay in tented camps throughout the entirety of your stay, each tent is shared between 2-3 people of the same gender. Comfortable, off-ground and single mattress beds are provided, shower and toilet facilities are communal – with hot water supplied by solar energy.

Enjoy the swimming pool located on site and recharge electrical items using the power sockets supplied in the communal areas.

Food

Receive three meals a day, prepared by the kitchen staff. Please let us know in advance of any dietary requirements so we can ensure you will be adequately catered for.

At the weekend, a braai (barbecue) is often arranged and tea, coffee and fruit is available all day from the volunteer area.
