FUNDU Community Project

The FUNDU Community project is one of the leading community support projects in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Gap Africa Projects works in conjunction with FUNDU to maintain strategic, sustainable community projects in and around the area of Port Alfred. Due to the structure of the local university and support they provide to the local community it allows the FUNDU Community project to work in harmony with these existing initiatives.

The FUNDU Community project allows volunteers the opportunity to get involved in a variety of meaningful and sustainable projects in the area. Volunteers will work alongside community leaders and full time students from the campus to help ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives ensuring you will leave your project knowing you have made a genuine difference.

Full Course Details


Project Type: Community Project, work with children.

Location: Port Alfred, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Pick Up Point: Port Elizabeth Airport.

Duration: 2 weeks – 12 weeks.

Price: from £845 for 2 Weeks.

Start Dates: Projects start on a Monday and operate year round.

Accommodation: Volunteers are accommodated at a local guest house near to University.

Meals: Three meals a day included, meal preparation is semi participation.

Age Range: 17 Plus.


Your FUNDU Community Project will get you involved in the heart of the local community allowing you to join our sustainable projects that are in place to help the local communities in the areas that they need it most.

The main focus is behind the sustainability of the projects that support the local community. In order for these projects to make a real difference our focus is placed on working with the community to identify where our efforts can be most effective and thus making the biggest difference.

During your placement you will work along side the community development department at FUNDU South Africa. The community project department of is currently involved in approximately 30 projects in Port Alfred, Bathurst, Alexandria and Kenton-on-Sea, working in conjunction with the Community Development Department you will identify which projects you will be able to assist with and make the biggest difference with the skills and passions you posses.

– Rowing club.
– Activity Centre.
– Kenton-on-sea (social mapping).
– Bathurst Community Centre.
– Harris House/ Feeding scheme.
– Teaching programme PABO.
– Soccer initiative.
– TB hospital.
– Umanyano Forum.
– Community board.
– Drug and alcohol prevention in schools and the broader youth.
– Viable entrepreneurship and Business development.
– Sisonke HIV/AIDS programme.
– Crisis centre with the South African Police Department.
– Back-to-school programme for drop-outs.
– INGUBo project with street children.
– Children with mental disability (Enkuthzweni).
– The NEMATO centre for the disabled.
– Nemato foundation.
– Arthritis foundation.
– Rape Victims support programme.
– Bakery and Catering.
– Social Card.
– Computer literacy programme.
– Situational and Needs analysis for other community development organisations.
– Teenage pregnancy prevention programme.
– Addressing the issue of dysfunctional families.
– Logistical support to Pre-schools.
– Cleaning programme.
– ‘Holiday Activities’ programme.
– AIDS orphans.
– Station Hill Development Trust.
– Station Hill Youth.

Due to the large variation in projects, your orientation period will be spent understanding the different fundamentals of each of these initiatives. Our experienced ground team will then help place you locations that will best suit your interests and abilities, thus allowing you to contribute and make a real difference.

Where You'll Stay


For the duration of your project you will be accommodated in self contained properties. The accommodation will have between 2 and 4 twin bedrooms depending on group sizes, shared bathrooms, a communal living area and a kitchen.

Three meals a day will be prepared for you at the local campus and you will share these facilities with permanent students who study there.

Due to the nature and safety of the surrounding area it is not uncommon for students to take advantage of the many bars and restaurants in the area.


Welcome to the heart of the Sunshine Coast. Port Alfred is the most sought-after holiday destination on Route 72 and is known for its wonderful temperate climate, endless pristine beaches, friendly village atmosphere, glorious surf, magnificent deep sea and river fishing. The laid-back lifestyle is loved by all its visitors, some of whom become permanent residents.

The scenic coastal town of Port Alfred lies midway between Port Elizabeth and East London on the Kowie River. It is a bustling commercial and residential town in magnificently picturesque surroundings. The climate is wonderful, especially from November to June, with calm days and crisp nights, sunny summers and mild winters.

The atmosphere is tranquil yet abuzz with outdoor activities including river and ocean watersports, horse rides and trails in neighbouring game reserves. There are avionic activities at the local Air School.
